About us
The Inter-University Trans Association was founded in late May 2025 as a response to the supreme court’s ruling on the definition of sex under the Equality Act (2010) and the subsequent interim update from the Equality and Human Rights Committee that threatens broad swathes of restrictive policies in the final statutory guidance when it is published. Responses from many universities across the UK have been highly disappointing in that, while claiming to be inclusive of trans students, they intend to capitulate to the proposed repressive rules. Here at IUTA, we operate on the belief that universities that take action to implement the EHRC guidance on single-sex spaces are directly contravening their commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for its trans students. More broadly, the IUTA intends to act as a source of advice, solidarity and community for trans groups and individuals at UK universities and assist in advocacy in amending university policies to better support trans students.
Our Aims
To make a joint statement at the EHRC’s public consultation.
Act as an official line of communication between trans groups and individuals across UK universities.
Conduct media outreach to ensure the views and concerns of trans university students are heard as far and wide as possible.
Create a nationwide community of trans university students.
To orchestrate peaceful protests at UK universities to advocate for the rights of trans students.
To facilitate the setting-up of specific trans organisations in universities that do not have one yet.
